Jane Vanroe on collecting vintage powder compacts and compact mirrors. You can find Jane's designs at www.vanroe.com and on Amazon in the EU & USA
Widdop Bingham, the new owners of Stratton, Britain’s last vintage powder compact brand, are doing a great job of getting the current designs back to independent retailers like me. Four of the most popular compacts are back up on our Amazon compact store, with Strawberry Thief and Forget-me-not added in the next two days. We’re working on our website Vanroe to make it easier to use, so will keep all available stock on Amazon for the next month or so. Please bear with us in the meantime.
First the bad news: Widdop relaunched the Stratton brand earlier this year. Although they have some beautiful designs, their collection is entirely imported. This doesn’t sit well with my focus on British-made where possible.
The pewter is made by a family firm with 200 years in pewter, the enamel by another family company based in Birmingham, England’s famous Georgian jewellery quarter. I currently only produce compact mirrors, but hope to start making powder compacts in the near future.
But I’m still very proud of the work I did with Stratton, so read on if you’d like the background!
Widdop Bingham have very kindly invited me to their showroom next week to see the 7,000 other giftware products the company produces. Widdop began as a clock manufacturer in 1883, just down the road from us in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. The company is still run by the great grandsons of the founder, with the fifth generation joining the company in 2008. You can read more and see some lovely vintage photos at Widdop Bingham’s website. I’ll let you know about the visit next week!
