Which vintage or new powder compacts fit Max Factor Creme Puff?

I’m often asked which compacts can be filled with Max Factor’s Creme Puff pressed powder. It seems that there’s a brilliantly loyal following for this brand, which is one of the few original “cream powders” still produced after their explosion in the late 1950s.

I stock compacts that fit Max Factor Creme Puff over at Vanroe Compacts, but here’s a quick guide to all your options…

  • KIGU “pressed” powder compacts – manufactured after about 1960. Make sure that they don’t have a separate inner powder well with lid, as these were made for loose powder
  • Stratton‘s pressed powder compacts. The pressed powder compacts were also known as Glamorizers. You can tell as these have a little hole in the base (so that you can push out an empty powder pan with a hair pin)
  • Stratton’s convertible powder compacts. These have a removable powder sifter, and often an inner ring. Lift up the ring, remove the sifter and pop in your Creme Puff. The ring will hold the powder pan in place.
  • Most vintage compacts by Regent of London, Melissa, Boots and Yardley

All the above will of course fit 67mm refills by other brands. These include Estee Lauder Lucidity and Rimmel Stay Matte.

As a side note, my Grandma took her much loved Creme Puff to my sister’s wedding, and lamented the demise of compacts to fit.

“You can’t find them anywhere,” she exclaimed. “They used to stock them in Boots but I’ve looked and looked!”

She hadn’t made the connection to anything I’d proudly told her about Vanroe! Of course Grandma now has a gorgeous new Stratton… which, my Mum reports, she still hasn’t used because “it’s too nice”! She’s waiting until her old powder runs out, so that she can pop a brand new refill in!
